Issue: Insufficient substances in basic substance groups Chk: Named poly w/o duromers or Fillers/reinforcing materials, Filler (Dual Use) present for classification 5.1.a
The material in question is classified as 5.1.a – Filled Thermoplastics. To be classified as 5.1.a a material must contain the following:
- 10% or more of the substances in the Basic Substance Group Chk: Named *poly* w/o duromers¹ AND
- 5% or more of the substances in the Basic Substance Groups Fillers/reinforcing materials and/or FIller (Dual Use)
NOTE: For materials with a release date prior to May 10, 2023 any substances in the Filler (Dual Use) group are presumed to be used as fillers.
This material does not meet one or both of the requirements.
Thermoplastics are plastic materials which could be deformed when heated. This procedure is reversible. That means it could be repeated by heating up to a liquid state and cooling down again as often as required. Filled thermoplastics contain substances according to the definition in ISO 1043-2 Plastics – Symbols and abbreviated terms – Part 2: Fillers and reinforcing materials.
If this is a magnetic material consisting of metal oxides within a plastic matrix, this classification could be correct. Classification 5.1.a should be used for a thermoplastic polymer matrix and 5.4.x for a duromer matrix.
You can check for the groups a substance belongs to by highlighting the substance in the tree structure.
Action Required:
Review the material composition and classification and revise as necessary. If 5.1.a is the correct classification and the amount of thermoplastic polymer substances is less than 10%, add a remark to this material as follows to explain why the warnings generated by IMDS should be ignored in this case. For example, This material is correctly classified as 5.1.a per IMDS Recommendation 001a², Section 1.4 Special Materials. The percentages shown are correct for this material and the warning should be ignored.
¹ You can find the substances included in a basic substance group by searching for the group members in the substance search in IMDS.
